Original Poetry with Artifact

Grade: 6th

Topic: Poetry

Description: Critical readers make literary connections in structure and theme and then apply these to the larger context of identities and relationships.


3. Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Theme and Genre. Students analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about theme and genre in different cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding. Students are expected to: (A) infer the implicit theme of a work of fiction, distinguishing theme from the topic.

4. Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Poetry. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of poetry and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to:(A) explain how figurative language (e.g., personification, metaphors, similes, hyperbole)

Creativity and innovation. The student uses creative thinking and innovative processes to construct knowledge, generate new ideas, and create products. The student is expected to:  (B)  create original works as a means of personal or group expression;


After studying several poems, students will create an original poem according to teacher rubric. Students will then use found objects in the makerspace, or use creation technology such as Minecraft, Cospaces, or Adobe Spark to create a representation of their poem.
