Demonstrating Transformations with Stop Motion using an iPad

Grade: 8th Grade

Subject: Math

Topic: Transformations (Translations, Rotations, Reflections, and Dilations)

Description: Students demonstrate their understanding of transformations by creating stop motion videos using two apps on the iPad – Educreations and iMotion. In Educreations, they model the movements of a shape on the coordinate plane and show their understanding of whether the shape retains its congruence and orientation. After capturing screenshots of the moving object, the screenshots are imported into iMotion to create a GIF.

Math TEKS: 10(A) generalize the properties of orientation and congruence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations of two-dimensional shapes on a coordinate plane; 10(B) differentiate between transformations that preserve congruence and those that do not; 10(C) explain the effect of translations, reflections over the x- or y-axis, and rotations limited to 90°, 180°, 270°, and 360° as applied to two-dimensional shapes on a coordinate plane using an algebraic representation;

Technology TEKS: 1(A) identify, create, and use files in various formats such as text, raster and vector graphics, video, and audio files; (B) create original works as a means of personal or group expression; (C) explore complex systems or issues using models, simulations, and new technologies to make predictions, modify input, and review results; and (D) analyze trends and forecast possibilities.
2(B) communicate effectively with multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats;
4(B) plan and manage activities to develop a solution, design a computer program, or complete a project; (E) make informed decisions and support reasoning; and (F) transfer current knowledge to the learning of newly encountered technologies.          6(N) integrate two or more technology tools to create a new digital product.
